The Elishama-Sha`ar Hashomron pipeline is designed with diameters of 48″/54″/60″ and a length of about 12 km, and will be the main source of water supply for the Trans-Samaria axis towards Ariel and the mountain range settlements, as well as toward Alfei Menashe on a new alignment from Oranit. Due to the large designed pipeline diameters and the height differences of 150 meters along the pipeline, there is a risk of damage to the pipe during non-steady flow conditions. Ecolog conducted hydraulic analysis of the Elishama-Sha`ar Hashomron pipeline and for the Alfei Menashe pipeline that is scheduled to branch out from it. The work included the performance of a dynamic hydraulic model using the Surge software by KY Pipe, that performs analysis of non-steady situations that may occur in the pipeline system during various scenarios. The work also included the evaluation of measures to restrain hydraulic hammer conditions in the system as needed, such as installing water hammer arrestor air valves, surge-anticipating valves, or pressure tanks at different locations in the system.
